Obviously osama's intolerance, hatred, and killing of non-muslims (basic teaching of islam's founder....muhammad) was the significant reason for the nearly 20 year manhunt, however it should also be remembered that osama and al qaeda promoted and enforced a very unpopular smoking ban which caused some muslims to turn against al qaeda as explained in link below:
